The Agency I Quit Couldn't Build a Community This Strong — Podcasts Can, and Here's How.

I used to think "community building" was just another agency buzzword. Something we tacked onto proposals to justify a bigger budget, a nebulous goal that rarely materialized into anything more than a few scattered likes and an email list full of ghosts. Believe me, I tried. Oh, did I try.

I still cringe remembering "The Thought Leadership Forum" I spearheaded back in 2018 for a mid-tier financial tech client. It was supposed to be a groundbreaking online space for industry experts. We spent weeks designing the UI, crafting bespoke content, even hired a "community manager" (which was just an intern named Kevin who knew how to use Slack). We launched it with a fancy virtual keynote, complete with pixelated confetti and awkward Q&A pauses. Three weeks later, we had 17 registered users—12 of whom were us, the agency staff, and the other five were bots. Kevin resigned. It was, in a word, a disaster. A soul-crushing, "why-did-I-spend-my-entire-Friday-night-tweaking-a-forum-signature-line" kind of disaster.

So, when I hear people talk about community, my internal BS detector, honed by years of agency-speak and failed campaigns, goes off like a fire alarm in a library.

Ready to build a community that doesn't feel like pulling teeth? Start telling your story with

  • Clear Calls to Action: Podcasts provide a natural platform for specific invitations to join community spaces (like a Discord, Facebook groups, or a forum" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Storytime, attend events, or participate in discussions. You're literally talking to them and asking them to join.
  • Featuring Community Members: Dedicating segments to listener questions, voicemails, shout-outs, or even guest interviews makes community members feel incredibly valued and visible, which is huge for loyalty.
  • Content for Discussion: Episodes serve as excellent starting points for conversations, debates, and shared learning within dedicated community forums. It gives them something concrete to chew on together.
  • By combining compelling audio content with intentional strategies for engagement, podcasts genuinely transform individual listeners into a collective, active community.

What podcast format works for community growth?

While many formats can certainly work, some are, in my opinion, particularly effective for community growth: * Interview-style: Bringing on experts or even community members themselves fosters diverse perspectives and makes listeners feel like they're part of a larger, evolving conversation. * Solo Host/Monologue: This format allows for a highly personal, intimate connection, making listeners feel like you're talking directly to them. It's excellent for building deep rapport and sharing your unique perspective, flaws and all. * Co-hosted/Conversational: The dynamic between hosts can create a friendly, engaging, and often humorous atmosphere that listeners just want to be a part of. It feels like eavesdropping on a great chat. * Q&A or Listener-focused: Dedicating episodes or segments to answering questions submitted by your audience directly involves them in the content creation process, making them feel heard and deeply valued. * Hybrid Formats: Often, the most successful podcasts blend these. For instance, a solo host might interview guests occasionally and dedicate a weekly segment to listener questions. That's probably my favorite approach.

The most crucial element, regardless of format, is authenticity, consistency, and a clear, well-thought-out strategy for directing listeners into your community's dedicated spaces.
